IPITEK Introduces New Carrier-Ethernet Services Platform

May 5, 2009

IPITEK’s Internet Media Transport division (IMTRAN®) today unveiled a new Carrier Ethernet Services Platform (MSP-CES®) with Circuit Emulation, creating a cost-effective method for cable operators with legacy interfaces to seamlessly transition to an Ethernet-based platform. IPITEK’s new MSP-CES was developed in conjunction with several cable operators to help them take advantage of carrier class Ethernet for delivery of voice, video, and data services to their business customers, while still providing a solution that can reliably support traditional TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) traffic.

The MSP-CES is a modular 1RU platform that uses Circuit Emulation (which allows the transport of synchronous circuits over asynchronous networks) to hold both TDM and Ethernet line cards for Ethernet transport of legacy voice and data. By using line cards instead of a fixed port configuration, IPITEK’s MSP-CES delivers the most flexible configuration options to operators, allows for support of both 1-GE and 10-GE services in the same chassis simply by using two different line cards, and enables the most cost effective and timely support of new protocols which allows for easy migration to future generation Ethernet networks.

With 24 channels in the initial 1-GE release of the MSP-CES, IPITEK is able to deliver a dramatic price per port advantage over competitive offerings. Other key features of the MSP-CES product include:

  • Ability to support data and TDM services over Ethernet
  • Highest reliability and wire speed performance in the industry
  • Adaptive clock recovery and synchronization schemes
  • Compact and power efficient
  • QoS features enabling delivery of multiple services from real time voice to best efforts data
  • Flexible configuration options with support for any protected topology
  • Advanced Ethernet IEEE and ITU standardized OAM and monitoring capabilities

“As cable MSOs are increasingly recognizing the scalability and performance advantages of carrier class Ethernet for delivery of voice, video, and data services to their business customers, they need a solution that can still reliably support TDM traffic,” said IPITEK Chairman and CEO Michael Salour. “With significant input from our MSO partners, IPITEK’s MSP-CES allows operators to address these needs in a highly unique optical Ethernet platform with Circuit Emulation. The MSP-CES is now commercially available and the platform is already carrying live traffic in our first MSO customer’s network.”

The 1 RU MSP-CES can be rack or wall mounted and the platform holds TDM into Ethernet and Ethernet switching line cards. The initial version supports T1/E1 and OC-3/STM-1 services on the TDM side and 1-GE services on the Ethernet side. The system has been designed for seamless software assisted upgrades with new line cards without the need to change any other parts of the chassis. IPITEK plans to commercially release the 10-GE line card for the MSP-CES in the third quarter of 2009.
